O Trompetista Zen - Trumpet's Audition Part 1

Bom dia galera, continuando a tradução, Zen and the Art of the Trumpet by C.S. nestas traduções tenho como objetivo facilitar e compartilhar dicas de coisas importantes pra uma vida saudável e repleta de resultados positivos na vida trompetística!

VIDEO DO DIA: Um maravilhoso pistonista!!

Auditions

Auditioning is the process through which musicians are hired in symphony orchestras. In the United States the repertoire for auditions is derived primarily from significant orchestral passages in preliminary through semi-final and final rounds. In the final round the auditionee will usually be asked for a solo work and occasionally will also play either chamber music, or with the section or in some cases with the full orchestra. In many European orchestras the emphasis is on solo rather than orchestral literature.

Regardless of the format, however, auditioning can be one of the most stressful, anxiety-raising, frustranting and (depending on the outcome), either depressing or exhilarating experiences a musician will ever have.
That said, auditioning is currently a fact of life, and if someone wants to enter or pursue an orchestral career, then he/she has to learn how to present one's self in the most positive manner when playing an audition.

So, how should that be done? First of all, it is assumed that when a trumpet player decides to 'audition', he or she has achieved a fairly high level of proficiency on the instrument and an awareness of music in general and the orchestral repertoire in particular. In a time frame of anywhere from about ten minutes to a half hour, it is necessary to be able to show one's credentials: i.e. to make a positive, personal, musical statement encompasses sound, style, rhythm, dynamics, phrasing, etc., and of course: interpretation.

That sounds simple enough. So, what makes auditioning difficult? Let me list some of the problems as I perceive them.

accuracy - of course, accuracy is important, but because of our listening to recordings, where, due to the recording technique of splicing from who knows how many 'takes', we never ( or rarely) hear any mistakes on recordings.

This is probably one of the reasons why accurancy has taken on an excessive degree of importance, today, making it almost an obsession.

What does accuracy mean? If the auditionee plays no wrong notes but does not play with any nuance, inflection, or timbre, which would make his playing into an artistic musical interpretation, he may in fact be 'missing' all the notes.

Dynamics - The advice "avoid dynamic extremes" is sometimes given. The only reason I can imagine someone would recommend this is in pursuit of playing safe, not taking chances.

But what does this lead to? If a marking of FFF is rendered F, or PPP becomes P, then the committee/conductor will probably think either this person has a very limited dynamic range, or this person is not paying attention to what the composer has written, or the person has been overly cautious.

In fact, although there is absolutely no consensus as to a precise decibel-level for each dynamic, the candidate must show he is capable of playing at all dynamic leves, including at the extremes.

O Trompetista Zen - Articulation on the Trumpet

Boa tarde pessoal, aqui vai mais um artigo do livro Zen and The Art of the Trumpet by C.S.

Articulation

What is this process we call articulation? It is about how notes are connected either by sound or by silence. Yes, also by silence.

A slur is the sound that connects the notes of different pitch.

Silence is harder to define; it's not quite enough to say "absence of music", because silence between the note is as important for expression as the sound of notes themselves; they are partners. A rest is a notation for silence. But, all the notes not connected by sound (i.e. detaché ) legato and staccato notes are connected by silence: the problem is "by how much silence". This is determined by several factors: shape of note, rhythmic pattern, tempo, stylistic rules.

The tongue, of course plays an important role in articulation. Usually the emphasis is on the tongue starting the note - in other words: much attention, or even an exclusive concern, is focused on the attack. However the tongue controls the duration (i.e length) of the note. It is, in fact the end of the note which determines whether a note is legato or staccato. In human speech, articulation refers to the pronounciation of whole phrases, not just the start of each word. Therefore one should focus one's attention on the end of the notes ( duration, grouping, spacing, accents, intensity, etc).

Excerpts from trumpet lessons: T (teacher) S (student)

(S plays Etude, with fast and slower note)
T: you can't articulate well if you don't keep the feel of steady tempo; use you foot.
(S plays more on the beat, but misses notes)
T: if you rush you'll get wrong notes, just as sure as you sit on this chair...
(S plays more to a steady beat)
T: better; you see, when you rush you try to go to the future before it's there...due to anxiety.
(S plays another sequence going up to high d, through fast notes; misses notes but hit the d all right)
T: OK; you wanted the high note and you got it, but you missed most of the others, you rushed and you did not know in what shape to play the notes, also you forgot to tap your foot (demonstrates on student's trumpet and mouthpiece) ....when you rush it's like an iron bridge that falls to pieces...nuts and bolts falling out...if you do not play the notes in time you'll miss them.
S: and I must think of the end of the notes.
T: yes, that's right and it's good if you teach yourself what to do.
(S plays this sequence getting all the notes)
T: now, it's not enough to play all the notes, we need the right shape of the note (sings the sequence to suggest a concept: articulation plus a feeling of music and the right speed and correct inflections).
(S plays the notes; T conducts)
T: consider the notes plus the silence between notes, watch the relationship between the notes and silence, you'll realize silence is as important the note.
(S plays better)

Trechos de trompete aulas/lições:

P (professor) E (estudante)

(E toca as notas; P rege)
(E toca melhor).

(S2 plays rather well: sound, precision; orchestral excerpt)
T: let's see the colour of this, otherwise it is too repetitious (demosntrates on student's horn an mouthpiece)
(S plays with more nuances)
T: put a little more energy in there
(S plays with too much sizzle)
T: yes, but with less energy on the end of the note.
(S plays with better balance and sound)
T: of course you can't do the same at any speed... (demonstrates extremely slow tempo - laughs)

(S3 plays Etude)
T: here the accents result from spacing
(S plays, has problems)
T: think the intervals to be smaller, rather than bigger
(S plays much better)
(S plays other piece)
T: think of the shape of the notes and try to get the same sound on all the notes
(S plays, missing notes)
T ( avoid insisting on what went wrong) think of the process, on how the notes are connected ( demonstrates)
(S plays)
T: play the thirds in tune, otherwise all the rest gets higher and higher; with panic on tends always to think and make the intervals longer while you should precisely do the reverse...
(S plays better)

(E toca melhor)

(S4 plays a few lines of Etude)
T: be careful not to be deceived by something that looks fairly easy
(S plays again)
T: these notes feel pushed as if we were going down the hill, and the notes had no end at all.
(S plays without rushing but not in line with the foot, missing some notes)
T: keeping in line with the foot is more important, even if you play some false notes)
(S plays while lacking air)
T: if you take only brief breaths they will also go out very quickly and you will tend to play too high on the pitch
(S takes bigger breath)
T: that's it, so you see, each day you pay attention to intonation, articulation, rhythm whatever problems you may have and you put all this together. Think of an oriental carpet with its overall design, it is this overall pattern, of the piece it amounts to.

(E4 toca algumas linhas/pentagramas do Etude)

(S5 plays Etude with double and triple tonguing)
T: what is the tongue doing? all it does is shape the notes. Don't think tukutu or tutuku
...the tongue is not saying anything. Perhaps think dHOt or dHAgHA, or dHAdHAgHA, but the tip of the tongue does not get involved at all. (demonstrates on student's trumpet and mouthpiece)
(S plays)
T: you play with too much muscular contraction, as if you were an octave higher.
(S plays more relaxed but mixes up articulation and fingers)
T: let your fingers do the walking...and you need to have rhythmic understanding of the piece.
(S plays all the notes)
T: all right, now be sure you keep the last notes of this ascending arpeggio down.
(S plays)
T: but you can put in a little more energy here.
(S plays)
T: now, some of this is slunged...tongued and slurred (demonstrates).
(S plays)
T: You can do it...!

(demonstra no instrumento e bocal do estudante).
(E toca)
(E toca todas as notas)
P: tudo certo, agora tenha certeza que voce mantenha as últimas notas deste arpejo descendente.
(E toca)
(E toca)
P: agora, parte disso é 'slunged'...articulado e ligado/legato (demonstra)
(E toca)
P: Voce pode fazer...!

In my teaching I avoid focusing on the exact physical cause of the problem at hand. I direct attention to the music, breathing and other basics like staying in the right tempo, rather than delving into "theoretical" discussions over embouchure, etc. Also I think that drawing the attention to the end of the notes has a relaxing effect and better allows the player to consider the musical and artistic facets of playing rather than just the technical problem of the connection of the notes. The process of writing and reading words provides a metaphor. We are interested in the content of sentences, paragraphs, and whole books not just in syllables, discrete words, or parts of sentence.

Here we encounter a paradox. It is difficult to achieve good articulation while centering one's attention on articulation. Eventually one will articulate by merely considering the context of notes and the feeling of the music.

O Trompetista Zen - Anxiety on the Trumpet

Bom dia pessoal, dando continuidade em minhas traduções, Zen and the Art of the Trumpet, C.S.

Na pistonada: Fred Mills, Ronald Romm, (Canadian Brass) Charles Schlueter, Peter Chapman, (Boston Symphony) Phil Smith (NY Philharmonic) Mark Gould (Metropolitan Opera Orchestra).

Anxiety

Anxiety occurs in many forms. Sometimes it is referred to as stagefright, jitters, performances-nerves, or panic. Each of these is an example of a psychological manifestation of anxiety. The physical forms are tension (tenseness), tremors (shakes), nausea (vomiting), etc.

Ansiedade

Strictly speaking, there is no anxiety in the present. There is anxiety when one worries about the past (evaluating or judging what was just played). There is anxiety when one worries about the future (about what is to be played). And combining the two: worrying about what is coming that you have screwed up in the past.

One cannot stay in the present by concentrating on the present. By using one's imagination, dealing with all aspects of one's playing (tone, dynamics, nuances, phrasing, etc), rather than simply playing the notes, you will keep your conscious mind occupied with things other than worrying. This being achieved the non-conscious mind will enable you to do what you have trained yourself to do.

This ideally helps to avoid analyzing and judging one's action while it is ocurring, therefore helping to eliminate rather than to encourage anxiety.

This will be delved into more in the section on practicing. The use of imagination that must be incorporated into this type of concentration we are advocating must be learned during practice.

Concentrating on breathing (inhaling) will help keep the conscious mind occupied, and keep the whole physical system well provided with oxygen which will contribute to the body's own ability to eliminate muscular tension.

Self-hypnosis is another way of reducing anxiety. There is nothing mysterious or exotic, or even dangerous about hypnosis. Basically, hypnosis is an altered state of consciouness, which most people will experience sometimes, or even on a regular basis, even if not aware of it. Example: Have you ever walked or driven to a friend's house to discuss the vacation you are planning to take together? You are so deeply engrossed in imagining how much fun you will have, that suddenly, you are at your friend's house and you don't remember anything you saw on the way or even being aware of having made the necessary turns, etc. This is sometimes referred to as "being on automatic pilot." Actually, this was a hypnotic trance. Everyone can think of many occasions where this sort of thing has occurred. When the conscious mind is completely occupied or absorbed; the unconscious mind will still be able to function and to do what it has 'learned' to do. This is also true of playing the trumpet. If, while practicing, one actively uses the conscious mind to be imaginative and curious about timbre, nuance, shaping, articulation, phrasing, etc, the unconscious mind will do the actual playing. This active participation will help reduce anxiety.

(Obviously, the above is a cursory, extremely simplistic example of self-hypnosis. Anyone wishing to pursue this further must find someone who is highly trained and qualified in the discipline of hypnosis.)

A few years ago, some experiments using Beta-blockers were done with musicians. The primary use for Beta-blockers is for people who suffer from hyper-tension, high blood pressure, irregular heart beat, and a few other conditions. Since Beta-blockers prevent too much adrenaline being secreted into the system, anxiety can be coped with also. Anxiety isn't reduced as it is with the use of tranquilizers, but without the jolt that adrenaline produces, one is able to function better. The effect is: whatever can be done under optimum conditions can be done under the most stressful. Beta-blockers will not enable a person to do anything that cannot already be done. Although the dosage for medical purposes is often 40mg. or higher, it has been my experience that a dose of 10mg. is sufficient for dealing with performance anxiety. One does not feel any 'calmer', but if one misses a note or has some other malfunction, the usual accompanying emotional jolt that normally triggers the rush of adrenaline will not occur. One can continue to function in the most positive manner.

Because Beta-blockers can have adverse affects on someone suffering from asthma or someone having extremely low blood pressure, they should be used only under a doctor's supervision.

Another instantaneous way to reduce anxiety is to 'pinch' the webbing (the 'fleshyet' part) between the thumb and forefinger of either hand, with the thumb and forefinger of the other hand. The level of pain indicates the level of anxiety. As the level of pain subsides, increase the pressure until there is no more pain. This should be done on each hand. Usually, one side will hurt more than the other, but not necessarily. One will immediately notice the decrease in anxiety.

O Trompetista Zen - Accuracy on the Trumpet

Boa tarde galera, retomando minhas traduções, no livro Zen and the Art of the Trumpet, está este artigo que traduzo logo abaixo, Accuracy on the trumpet, precisão ao trompete.

Accuracy

Accuracy is always a prime concern of trumpeters. On an instrument as visible to the listener's ears as the trumpet, the player wants to avoid a 'spleah' at all costs. However, if missing no notes becomes the main goal of playing the trumpet, then neither the performer nor the audience will receive much pleasure from a concert. If I were to hear a performance (on any instrument) that was note perfect and nothing more, then I would conclude that the player missed all the notes.
One of the goals of practicing is to achieve greater accuracy. I think there is a tendency to practice material such as an etude repeatedly, in an effort to play it perfectly, i.e. no wrong notes, no wrong rhythms, no wrong articulation, etc. When I was very young I learned that I was never going to play anything perfectly. The more I made perfection a goal the more notes I missed. I couldn't play any etude perfectly. So, I decided that instead of trying to play an etude the same evry time, I tried to never play anything the same way.
This obviously does note mean that I changed notes or rhythms or tempo (although tempo is one of the least absolute ingredients of music), or dynamics (another non absolute). One is obligated to play what the composer has written. But one is also obligated to play what the composer has not written, i.e. nuance, inflection, timbre. Ironically, when one uses one's imagination in this manner, accuracy increases dramatically.

samuca
